Travertine, slowly

A year of visits to one quarry, and what it taught us about patience.

For Casa Travertino we visited the same quarry eleven times in a year. Stone from one face of the hill is warmer than stone from the other, and the difference only shows in certain light.

We chose every block by hand and numbered it, so the courses on the house run in the same order they were cut from the ground. The joints line up with the bedding of the stone.

It added four months to the programme. Standing on the finished terrace, nobody has asked about the four months.
